His superpowers include ability of flight, superhuman strength, and fire breathing amongst other powers. Because of his dragon abilities, Jake is destined to be the protector and champion of all magical creatures. Jake must find balance in his life, leading a life of a hero and a teenager. Jake is always looking for short cuts, which often leads to the endangerment of himself, his family and friends, and the entire magical world in general.

“Grandpa” Long / Lao Shi: Jake’s grandfather. Descended from a long line of Chinese Dragons, Lao Shi moved from Hong Kong to New York to raise his daughter, Susan. After Jake got his dragon powers, Lao Shi became his grandson’s master and trainer. Lao Shi’s teaching style is a bit unorthodox, guiding Jake with tough love. Lao Shi has a love for dancing to disco and island jazz.

Fu Dog: This 600-year old Shar-pei is the sidekick for both Jake and Lao Shi. Fu provides magical record keeping and potion making for Team Dragon. However, Fu can easily be manipulated with food and often gets into gambling debts.

Trixie Carter: One of Jake’s best friends. She is sassy, energetic, and a tomboy. Like Jake, Trixie loves skateboard, hip-hop music. Of Jake’s friends, she is the more cautious one.

Arthur “Spud” P. Spudinski: Jake’s other best friend. Spud is often found with Trixie. Spud is very loyal. His slow, naive ways are very deceptive. He is quite intelligent and has exceptional computer skills. Spud is repulsed by the ‘Type A’ competitive lifestyle. He would rather live the life of a skateboarding slacker.

Haley Kay Long: Jake’s talented and intelligent little sister. Haley lives to upstage Jake at everything, leading to much tension. Haley also recently discovered her dragon powers.

Jonathan Long: Jake’s father, who has a square persona. He has no idea that he married into a family of dragons, though this realisation nearly happened in "Hero of the Hourglass"

Susan Long: Jake's mother. Even though dragon powers skipped her generation, she feels for her son trying to balance his life. She has worked hard to cover up the truth from her husband, Jonathan.

Rose/Huntsgirl: Rose is Jake’s longtime crush and de facto girlfriend. She was also programmed to be Jake’s worse nightmare. Rose is a caring, thoughtful, and a loving character. In her heart, she wants to perform what is right. However, she was raised by the evil organization, the Huntsclan. The Huntsclan wants the destruction of the entire magical world, including the dragons, the magical protectors. As a member of the Huntsclan, Rose developed an alter ego, Huntsgirl. Huntsgirl is a ruthless and quite skilled warrior. Rose sought to accomplish this goal. This all changed, when she found out the dragon she wanted to slay was the person she had a crush on, Jake. Now, she appears to want to help Jake and take down theHuntsclan from within.


Villains
Huntsman/ “Huntsmaster”: Lao Shi and Jake’s main villain. The Huntsman is the leader of the New York branch of the Huntsclan as well as Huntsgirl’s mentor. For over twenty years, the Huntsman has desired to destroy all dragons. The Huntsman has great combat skills and knowledge of the magical community, which he wants to destroy. Unfortunately, in battles with the dragons, the lack of superpowers has cost him quite a few battles.

Eli Pandarus: “The Wizard of Wall Street", literally. Together with his Dark magic and his army of trolls, Eli wants to conquer and control the magical and human worlds. Eli is quite wealthy, yet not above stealing. Eli’s spell powers often give Jake problems. He owns a private island and his own building, Pandarus Towers, where he lives.

The Dark Dragon: Magical Enemy #1. He is considered Jake's most menacing villain. The Dark Dragon’s origin is unknown. He is a master of dragon powers and has destroyed all but two dragons he’s faced. Those two are a young Lao Shi and Jake Long. The full extent of his power has yet to be seen. He can call up shadow minions to his aid (known as Shades), but he rarely enters the action. Instead, he works as the "top dog", relying on his subordinates (also known as "Dark Agents") to do his dirty work. The now incarcerated Councilor Chang is an example.
